Three-day Photogravure Workshop with Master Printer Unai San Martin

SMITH ANDERSEN NORTH presents an intensive photogravure workshop with master printer Unai San Martin at our Lab in San Rafael, CA. The class runs from 10 am to 5 pm daily, with a 45-minute lunch break. The workshop is $725 and includes all materials except paper and copper, which are charged at cost. Participants will each etch two 8 x 10-inch plates (7 x 9 inches after trimming). Most of the plates will be exposed with an aquatint screen, but we will also demonstrate the dustgrain aquatint process with one or two of the plates. This workshop is limited to only 3 participants.

Reservations are made first-come, first-served by e-mail and with a $375 deposit paid to Smith Andersen North. The balance of the class fee is due by the first morning of instruction. Material costs are tallied up on the final day. Please respond soon as space is limited!

Photogravure, an intaglio process developed between 1850 and 1880, was one of the first successful techniques used to edition photographic images. Its tonal and archival qualities are so superb, that even after the arrival of more commercially viable processes in the early 20th century, photographers such as Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Curtis, and Paul Strand used it to edition some of their most important works. Fine art presses and book publishers still use the process today.

Unai San Martin has won several prestigious awards for his evocative and subtle photogravures, including the Joan Miro Prize, Sotheby's first prize, and the first prize in the National Printmaking Competition in Madrid. His work is in more than 20 museums as well as in collections in Europe and the United States, such as the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and the di Rosa Collection. He has taught workshops on the photogravure process both locally and overseas and has made gravures for almost 20 years. He teaches at the Kala Institute in Berkeley and Smith Andersen North.
